Szermonostor

The Szermonostor Benedictine Abbey was founded at the end of 11th or early 12th century in honor of St. Mary.

During the Mongolian invasion it suffered from several damages, was later rebuilt, but was eventually dissolved before the 14th century. The ruins were still visible in the 19th century and modern excavations began in the 1970s and still continue today. It’s most famous find: a tau-shaped ivory crosier from a grave under the foundation dating to the 12th century.
